"Does Sex only really that sells?"

On the documentary that we had watched last Saturday which was made by Jean Kilbourne entitled “Killing Us Softly” was very educational. To what I’ve observed by the speaker, she has this sharp tongue to deliver her speech beautifully and to crack jokes that makes the audiences laugh and relate at the same time. However, it is somehow related on what we already see in advertising nowadays. On our group, on the question number 11, we chose television as the most preferred medium. Based on this website (http://www.livemint.com/2010/03/12205157/TV-most-preferred-mediumstud.html) according to their article entitled, “TV most preferred medium: study, that television is the preferred medium both in terms of usage (by consumers) and advertising impact. Also, they added that the research findings show that majority of the people are influenced by viewing advertisements on television followed by those published in newspapers.

Going back to Ms. Jean’s speech, the used of sensual images and deceiving words in order to advertise are definitely effective, especially when it come to increase a market. On the generation where in the trend of using as such sensual images in advertising, I think those people who engaged to that way are somehow lack of creativity in producing advertisements since they are used to use sex in advertisements just to sell. Indeed, sensual imagery is a very effective selling tool but it does not intend to show creativeness and originality since all the advertisers are already using them. Also, I think that it does not bring any good value to the consumers who are patronizing their products. Based on the speaker, she had made good points which she done it to make the listener easily to understand her side, by providing some pictures of the ads. Advertisement is now everywhere, we can easily find them either we are out or inside our house, we cannot resist from seeing those advertisement nowadays which I believe it is a powerful tool that would make everyone easily act how they want us to act. As a female, sad to hear that women are always the object in every media, according to Jean’s research, women are always the domestic little homemaker which obviously describe women as being weak, attractive woman become a object but the less attractive woman become undesired and men are always displayed as strong and vigorous. For me, I don’t think that always looking good will solve everyone’s problem, It shows that models are so perfectly glamorous and having beautiful lives, when actually in reality they don’t really seem happy at all. People can be happy in so many aspect, and for that, we cannot be totally happy if we continuously seeing such images or sexy ads that would make us feel unsatisfied or insecure every time this advertisements will educate us that we still don’t have everything that sometimes it is not worth having actually. This topic relates on what I’ve conducted a study on our research entitled “SENSUALITY in the ADVERTISING INDUSTRY: Impact,Perceptions and Influence to THe SELECTED MASS COMMUNICATION Students, based on the conclusion , the use of sensual imagery in advertising causes a stir in the society. As they see an advertisement having sensual images, it easily attracts their attention possibly because of the vulgarity of the advertisement they are seeing, or because sex is the main focal point of the advertisement. We live in a world where woman have been harmed for being attractive or not and objectified. On the negative side, which was according to my undergraduate research, people mostly agreed that sensual images in advertising are morally harmful to the society and it is very manipulative of viewers in all probability because these ads connote a sexual tone to it which the advertisers think that using those kind of ads is very effective in increasing sales of the manufacturers of the products and very profitable. This refers in general which both men and woman that we are being brainwashed by this advertisements that changes our culture in this new complex world that we are now having.

  1. It is a right question needed to answer right away. What does showing of sexy pictures or images really mean? Isn't just a seduction to satisfy the needs of the eyes of the public or of the viewers? I think advertisers who are making sexy ads must take a look first of the consequences of their advertisements to the eyes of the mass. And as viewers, or should I say consumers, we must also learn not to take a look on these ads as it is but to gaze the message and content that these advertisements would want to tell and prove us, not merely on the subject quite appealing to us.
