WOMEN AS OBJECT

Women are best describing as the goddesses of beauty. Goddess of beauty means for me that all women’s qualification are raised up and respected by themselves and as well as men. They have the ability of good communication with people, they have the ability to be strong and serve man’s goods.

The film I watched is a very interesting lecture by Jean Kilbourne of the different images of women in advertising. This lecture really made us recognized that how women’s images post for advertising culture. “In the late 1960s she began her exploration of the connection between advertising and several public health issues, including violence against women, eating disorders, and addiction, and launched a movement to promote media literacy as a way to prevent these problems”. - http://www.mediaed.org.

And until history noticed that better women should not be tolerated by this advertisements. As we all know, outside the country advertisements are being liberated with all aspects most especially with women, one of this examples is that women are being advertised for sexuality products to surely entertained and attract viewers. But this people are not being called for objection instead, they are being abide by higher government.

In Philippine history women is respected and adore by men. In the generation we have now, advertising censored materials are against the law. Both men and women are used in advertisement with their respected qualification. Women are object for products like perfumes, beauty products and spices while men are best offered in advertisements like jeans, shirts and undergarments meant only for men.

And now a days, sexuality has been one of the example of different advertisements because it catches human’s curiosity, and by that erotic poses are calling the attention of everybody for them to try. Calendar cover and Cover magazines (e.i, men's magazine) are also one of the examples of women as subject in sexuality. There are also a lot of examples in films and TV shows that shows women subject in sexuality like showing women wearing 'two piece' depending on there characters. And as I observed, every time I am seeing advertisements viewing character of a woman to subject of sexuality I also feel shy because to what that woman advertising his body I also see myself to her, then people seeing that woman too.

"Does Sex only really that sells?"

"Does Sex only really that sells?"

On the documentary that we had watched last Saturday which was made by Jean Kilbourne entitled “Killing Us Softly” was very educational. To what I’ve observed by the speaker, she has this sharp tongue to deliver her speech beautifully and to crack jokes that makes the audiences laugh and relate at the same time. However, it is somehow related on what we already see in advertising nowadays. On our group, on the question number 11, we chose television as the most preferred medium. Based on this website (http://www.livemint.com/2010/03/12205157/TV-most-preferred-mediumstud.html) according to their article entitled, “TV most preferred medium: study, that television is the preferred medium both in terms of usage (by consumers) and advertising impact. Also, they added that the research findings show that majority of the people are influenced by viewing advertisements on television followed by those published in newspapers.

Going back to Ms. Jean’s speech, the used of sensual images and deceiving words in order to advertise are definitely effective, especially when it come to increase a market. On the generation where in the trend of using as such sensual images in advertising, I think those people who engaged to that way are somehow lack of creativity in producing advertisements since they are used to use sex in advertisements just to sell. Indeed, sensual imagery is a very effective selling tool but it does not intend to show creativeness and originality since all the advertisers are already using them. Also, I think that it does not bring any good value to the consumers who are patronizing their products. Based on the speaker, she had made good points which she done it to make the listener easily to understand her side, by providing some pictures of the ads. Advertisement is now everywhere, we can easily find them either we are out or inside our house, we cannot resist from seeing those advertisement nowadays which I believe it is a powerful tool that would make everyone easily act how they want us to act. As a female, sad to hear that women are always the object in every media, according to Jean’s research, women are always the domestic little homemaker which obviously describe women as being weak, attractive woman become a object but the less attractive woman become undesired and men are always displayed as strong and vigorous. For me, I don’t think that always looking good will solve everyone’s problem, It shows that models are so perfectly glamorous and having beautiful lives, when actually in reality they don’t really seem happy at all. People can be happy in so many aspect, and for that, we cannot be totally happy if we continuously seeing such images or sexy ads that would make us feel unsatisfied or insecure every time this advertisements will educate us that we still don’t have everything that sometimes it is not worth having actually. This topic relates on what I’ve conducted a study on our research entitled “SENSUALITY in the ADVERTISING INDUSTRY: Impact,Perceptions and Influence to THe SELECTED MASS COMMUNICATION Students, based on the conclusion , the use of sensual imagery in advertising causes a stir in the society. As they see an advertisement having sensual images, it easily attracts their attention possibly because of the vulgarity of the advertisement they are seeing, or because sex is the main focal point of the advertisement. We live in a world where woman have been harmed for being attractive or not and objectified. On the negative side, which was according to my undergraduate research, people mostly agreed that sensual images in advertising are morally harmful to the society and it is very manipulative of viewers in all probability because these ads connote a sexual tone to it which the advertisers think that using those kind of ads is very effective in increasing sales of the manufacturers of the products and very profitable. This refers in general which both men and woman that we are being brainwashed by this advertisements that changes our culture in this new complex world that we are now having.

Sendong was coming to town

Sendong was coming to town

By: Ernilda Lalaine S. Uy

Before the year ended in 2011, the Philippines experienced a massive disaster which caused by the typhoon Sendong which hits in Northern Mindanao, the Visayas and Palawan. According to the news, it was stated that Sendong brought more than a month of average rainfall within 12 hours. It happened during December 17 and it was 2 in the morning where the flood starts to climb in the whole city. Many house and families was destroyed, Many people died, and their source of living were all gone.

During that time, I was peacefully sleeping and having some rest in my own bed, the feeling that the Christmas is near, I was excited to my plans and hang outs for the coming day, while those families was currently in the middle of their tragic death praying to still have hopes to survive. When I heard the news the next morning, I was exhausted and felt guilty to what I am experienced versus to what they’ve experienced. I can’t even imagine seeing our neighborhood’s roof like a paper that will stumble due to the strong wind and heavy rain, when actually in Mindanao, one of the house in the city was carried by the flood.

In our country, we have been experiencing several calamities that really test our hopes and belief in God. To what happened, I’ve realized that the country must prepare to avoid for more further accidents. I've prepared some things to do when there is a typhoon or any calamity the may come, some of my guidelines where learned by reading some newspaper, internet, and journals which they tackle about the different suggestions and tips in order to survive when a tragic typhoon comes. When we heard that we’ll be experiencing calamity in our country, especially when your city is one of the targets, we tend to panic during or before the disaster. For some, they get harmed not because of the typhoon, but because of our carelessness. We should remember that when it happens, we should calm down, that, will I guess we’ll avoid further tragic that can happen. In some cases like having strong winds, we should check the possible flying objects such as light metals, woods and other dangerous things that could harm us. Sometimes, typhoons stay for long hours to recover or to stop, and we could experience extreme hunger, we should bring extra food and some clothes. It is necessary to indicate those because sometimes we need to leave our house and be asked by the rescue to be on the evacuation area. It is a common sense, on my opinion, that we should stay away from those areas like beaches, tides can go higher and can destroy surroundings or any other infrastructure. And as a Christian, or any religion would have, we should also pray for ourselves and families that whatever happen, in the end of the day, you and your family are complete and hope that everyone will survive to the calamity also for the tragedy to be ended. These things would not be save you from any harm, but for me, with this way, this could possibly help you in surviving from the calling of death. In addition, according to Matthew 24:22; when distress and anguish cometh upon you; as they did at that time with a witness, when Jerusalem was besieged by the Romans: what with the sword of the enemy without, and the famine within; together with the vast number of cutthroats and seditious persons among themselves; it was such a time of distress and tribulation as never was from the beginning of the world, nor ever will be.

This should be a good lesson for all of us working towards a better world. I guess to what happened for some people who had died, especially for those ones who helped to save others but still they ended up killed in the tragedy, was resigned to the fact that they were going to be die. They got enough time to think of their love ones, people who have faced the life without fear whatever the consequences of death, was a good people who was content and appreciative of the life they had. Rest in peace to all the victims and more blessed life to have for those who survived during those terrible days.
